I stumbled upon this chocolate chip dessert pizza recipe last summer when I needed something fun and different for my son's birthday party. The combination of buttery cake mix topping with melty chocolate chips on a pizza crust creates this amazing dessert that looks impressive but comes together in minutes. It's been my go-to for potlucks and family gatherings ever since.

My neighbor's picky 9-year-old tried this at our backyard barbecue and asked for seconds, which her mother considered nothing short of miraculous. Sometimes the most unexpected recipes become the biggest crowd-pleasers.

Simple Ingredients

  • Pizza crust: Store-bought refrigerated dough works perfectly here and saves tons of time
  • Yellow cake mix: The secret ingredient that creates that cookie-like topping
  • Butter: Use real butter, not margarine, for the richest flavor
  • Milk chocolate chips: They melt beautifully, though semi-sweet work well too
  • Sugar mixture: The combination of white and brown sugars creates a sweet, slightly caramelized finish

Pizza Creation

Crust Preparation
Press the pizza dough out evenly, working from the center outward. Don't worry about making it perfectly round - a rustic shape adds to the charm. Those fork pricks all over the surface prevent bubbles from forming during that initial bake. The first time I made this, I skipped the fork pricks and ended up with one giant bubble in the middle that made the toppings slide off. Now I make sure to give it a good poking all over, especially in the center where bubbles tend to form.
Pre-Baking
That quick 5-minute pre-bake is crucial - it sets the crust just enough so it won't get soggy when you add the toppings, but not so much that it gets too crispy by the end. Think of it as creating a sturdy canvas for your sweet masterpiece. When I take it out after this step, the crust should look just barely set, not browned at all. If your oven runs hot, you might only need 3-4 minutes for this step.
Topping Mixture
When combining the cake mix and melted butter, it'll form a thick, almost cookie dough-like mixture. If it seems too dry, add a tablespoon more melted butter until it reaches a spreadable consistency. I find using the back of a spoon or an offset spatula makes spreading this mixture much easier than trying to use a knife. Make sure to spread it evenly but not all the way to the very edge - leave about a half-inch border for that classic pizza crust look.
Chocolate Addition
After sprinkling the chocolate chips, gently press them into the cake mixture. This prevents them from rolling off when you move the pizza in and out of the oven. I sometimes add a variety of chips - milk chocolate, semi-sweet, and even white chocolate for visual appeal. The gentle pressing is key - you don't want to push them down so far that they disappear into the topping.
Sugar Finishing
The dual sugar sprinkle creates that perfect sweet, slightly crisp top layer. I've found that avoiding the very edge helps prevent burning, as the sugars can caramelize too quickly on the exposed crust. You really can adjust the amount to your preference - my kids love it sweet so I use almost all of the mixture, but when making it for adults, I often use less for a more balanced dessert.
Final Baking
Watch carefully during this final bake - the difference between perfectly golden and burnt happens quickly. The pizza is done when the edges are light golden brown and the center looks set but is still slightly soft. It will continue to set as it cools. In my oven, 10 minutes is usually perfect, but I start checking at 8 minutes just to be safe.

My teenage daughter had friends over for a movie night last month, and I made this as a surprise treat. The look on their faces when I walked in with a "pizza" for dessert was priceless. They demolished the entire thing in minutes, with one girl asking if her mom could get the recipe because it was "way better than regular pizza."

Perfect Pairings

Serve this dessert pizza with vanilla ice cream for the ultimate hot-and-cold contrast. For brunches, pair it with fresh fruit to balance the sweetness. During the holidays, I add a drizzle of caramel sauce before serving for an extra special touch. My husband likes his with a cup of strong coffee, which actually complements the sweetness beautifully.

Creative Variations

Try adding a handful of mini marshmallows during the last few minutes of baking for a s'mores-inspired version. Swap the milk chocolate chips for peanut butter chips and sprinkle with chopped peanuts for a peanut butter cup variation. During fall, I sometimes add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the sugar mixture and use butterscotch chips for a seasonal twist. Last summer, I experimented with adding sliced strawberries after baking for a chocolate-covered strawberry vibe that was a huge hit at our family reunion.

I've made this chocolate chip dessert pizza countless times since discovering the recipe, tweaking it slightly each time until it's perfectly suited to my family's taste. What started as a novelty for a birthday party has become one of our most requested treats. There's something undeniably fun about serving a "pizza" for dessert, and the combination of crispy crust, cookie-like topping, and melty chocolate satisfies every sweet craving. My son's friends now ask if I'm making "that chocolate pizza thing" whenever they come over, which I consider the highest form of culinary praise from middle schoolers.
