Prepare and bake the red velvet cake as per the box directions. Let it cool completely.

Mix together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and salt until it’s completely smooth.

Crumble up the baked cake and slowly combine it with the frosting until you get a moldable texture.

Scoop out portions (about one tablespoon each) and roll into balls. Let them chill for 10 minutes in the freezer or about 30 minutes in the fridge.

Warm the candy melts and shortening in the microwave in short 30-second steps, stirring each time.

Dip the tip of each stick in the melted candy and insert into the balls. Pop them into the freezer for 10-15 minutes.

Fully coat each ball in the melted candy, tapping off extra coating. Stand them upright until the coating is firm.

Once the coating sets, add green candy stripes or a red heart as decoration. Let everything dry completely.
